"The Government did in 30 days what the previous government was unable to do in eight years - return to the decisions of the Sócrates Government. To all of them: the airport in Alcochete, the new Tagus crossing and the Lisbon-Madrid high-speed rail line", wrote the former prime minister (2005/2011) in a note sent to the Lusa news agency.

José Sócrates then considered it "very amusing to watch the acrobatic jump of the right-wing parties", in an allusion to the PSD and CDS-PP.

"What were once pharaonic works and a waste of public resources have now become absolutely priority infrastructure for development. Bravo. Sixteen years later", he said.

In the same note, the former leader of the socialists protested against the discourse of "fifty years of studies" on the location of the new Lisbon airport, considering that this "aims to put everything in the same bag".

"Very convenient, but false. Absolutely false. In my Government, we studied and made decisions. Sixteen years later we return to them. Sixteen years later", he stressed.

The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, announced today that the Government has approved the construction of the new airport for the Lisbon region in Alcochete, following the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI).

"The Government has decided to approve the development of the new Lisbon airport with a view to the full replacement of Humberto Delgado Airport at the Alcochete shooting range and to give it the name of Luís de Camões Airport", said Luís Montenegro, in a statement to the country, after an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers, this afternoon.

On 11 March, the CTI published the final report of the strategic environmental assessment of the new airport, maintaining the recommendation of a single solution in Alcochete, the most advantageous, or Vendas Novas, also indicating that Humberto Delgado + Santarém could be a transitional solution.

The PSD decided to set up an internal working group to analyse the location of the new Lisbon airport, after having agreed with the PS to set up a CTI to carry out the strategic environmental assessment.

The social democratic president, Luís Montenegro, guaranteed, before being elected, that the decision would be made "in the first days" of Government.
