Seixal Mayor welcomes choice of Alcochete for airport
The chairman of the Seixal Municipal Council congratulated today the construction of the airport in Campo de Tiro de Alcochete and recalled that it was Seixal that prevented the committing of a "strategic error" for the country.

The mayor explained that the municipality of Seixal used all means at the time, namely the right to veto, so as not to let the Montijo option move forward.
"It is worth fighting when we are right in the fight. At the time, we were heavily criticized and they said that we communists were against the development of the region. No, we were fighting for the development of the Setúbal region, defending good options", he said.
The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, announced today that the Government has approved the construction of the new airport for the Lisbon region in Alcochete, following the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI).
"The Government decided to approve the development of the new Lisbon airport with a view to the full replacement of Humberto Delgado Airport at the Alcochete Firing Range and to give it the name of Luís de Camões Airport", revealed Luís Montenegro, in a statement to the country, after an extraordinary meeting of the Council of Ministers, this afternoon.
The Air Force Firing Range, also known as the Alcochete Firing Range (due to the proximity of this urban centre), is mostly located in the parish of Samora Correia, in the municipality of Benavente (district of Santarém), and also has a small part in the parish of Canha, in the municipality of Montijo (district of Setúbal).
The mayor of Seixal added that "the option for Montijo Airport would affect thousands of people, between 30 and 35 thousand inhabitants, whose residences were located in the planned landing and take-off cone, from Quinta do Conde, Coina/Palhais, Baixa da Banheira, Vale da Amoreira and Lavradio".
In other residential areas of the municipality, he stressed, especially in the parish of Fernão Ferro and in the parish of Aldeia de Paio Pires, which are adjacent to the area affected by the aforementioned cone, the noise "would far exceed what is admissible, jeopardizing the health and well-being of the populations".
In the case of the Alcochete option, the mayor emphasizes that it is undoubtedly the solution that most safeguards the populations, including the residents of Seixal, and the best in economic and environmental terms.
