José Sousa Lameira, former vice-president of the CSM and as such the number two of Henrique Araújo in this management and discipline body of judges, was the first STJ counselor to present himself as a candidate for president of the high court, in the election between peers scheduled for today.
Also running for the position of fourth figure of the State are STJ vice-president Graça Amaral, who has already served as an advisor in this court, counselor Leonor Furtado, who was once general director of social reintegration, also vice-president Nuno Gonçalves, from the Public Prosecutor's Office, where he was until 2019, and counselor João Cura Mariano, who made his candidacy official a week before the election.
The counselor judges will today elect the successor to Henrique Araújo, who is leaving the position of president of the STJ for having reached the age limit of 70 years.
The president of the STJ is also, by virtue of his duties, president of the CSM.
