The Ministry of Foreign Affairs and the Ministry of Education are "developing efforts to create research programs, courses and even chairs in Portuguese language schools for Tetum, Creole, Timorese, Cape Verdean, Guinean and São Toméan languages," said Paulo Rangel, at the end of the urgent debate on the statements of the President of the Republic "regarding the historical reparation of the former overseas provinces."
"These languages are a cultural treasure of our common history, they have a huge influence of the Portuguese language that is yet to be investigated, studied and disseminated. This is the sign we want to leave to the Portuguese, to the Assembly of the Republic and to the Portuguese-speaking brother peoples," said the minister.
Paulo Rangel commented that the executive "does not agree with or adopt the terminology used" by Chega, stressing: "Historical truth demands that we do not speak of former overseas provinces, but of former colonies."
In his speech, he reiterated that the Portuguese Government will not promote "any process or program of specific actions with the purpose of repairing other States for the Portuguese colonial past," but admitted that "where an apology is fair," Portugal will do so.
"There are many who want these reparations to be based on resentment. The Portuguese Government, the Portuguese governments, do not cultivate or instigate resentment. They cultivate mutual respect and reconciliation with History, wherever it is imposed and justified," said the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs.
"Portugal is not afraid of its history. It will always fight for exemption, impartiality and historical truth," he stressed.
