A judicial source told Lusa that João Cura Mariano had already been the most voted in the first round of the suffrage in the group of five candidates, having then collected 24 votes.
Graça Amaral was the second most voted, with 15 votes, followed by the former vice president of the Superior Council of the Judiciary (CSM) José Sousa Lameira and the judge Leonor Furtado, both with eight, and the vice-president of the STJ Nuno Gonçalves, with five.
There were also some votes for judges who had not submitted a candidacy, with Cura Mariano being the last of the five candidates to run for the inter-peer elections.
The new president of the STJ -- fourth figure of the State - was a judge of the Constitutional Court between 2007 and 2016, passed through the Courts of Appeal of Coimbra and Porto and also integrated the Consultative Council of the Attorney General's Office.
He graduated in Law from the University of Coimbra and began working in the judiciary in 1986.
Cura Mariano, 66, succeeds Henrique Araújo in the presidency of the STJ, who leaves the post for having reached the age limit for the function: 70 years.
As the term of office of the president of the STJ is five years, the judge now elected will also not be able to fulfill his term until the end.
With the victory in this election, the judge also assumes, by virtue of his functions, the presidency of the CSM.
