According to the statement sent today to newsrooms by the criminal police body, the investigation to combat transnational drug trafficking by sea emerged from the identification (by the Tax and Customs Authority) of a container that had arrived at the Port of Sines, originating in Panama, and which, among photovoltaic panels and metal structures, also had several packages of cocaine.

"Through the efforts made by the Judiciary Police, it was found that the container would be transported to Spain, where the drug would be removed. Thus, the PJ set up a follow-up and surveillance device", said the security force.

In a joint action with the Cuerpo Nacional de Policia, from Spain, the authorities followed the arrival of the container to a warehouse in the Spanish city of Cáceres, where three suspects were arrested who were awaiting the arrival of the container to remove the drug.

Later, a fourth suspect was arrested, who the Spanish authorities point to as the main responsible for the criminal group.

The PJ also indicated that the four Spanish detainees have already been presented to the respective judicial authority, and the most serious measure of coercion was applied: preventive detention.

The intervention in the so-called Operation Leitão was carried out by the National Unit for Combating Drug Trafficking.
