Airport. CIM Coimbra Region "disappointed" with the choice of Alcochete
The Intermunicipal Community (CIM) of the Coimbra Region is "disillusioned" with the choice of Alcochete for the new Lisbon airport and will continue to fight for an airport infrastructure in the Central region, said the president of the institution today.

"Naturally, due to past positions, there is great disappointment from the mayors who had defended an airport north of the Tagus. We are leaving this process disillusioned", said Emílio Torrão, president of the CIM of the Coimbra Region, an institution that in the past had supported the construction of the airport in Santarém, to the Lusa agency.
According to the official, the mayors will continue to demand "an airport infrastructure for the Centre of the country", considering that "there are a set of needs that are not being met".
Despite the prospect of the high-speed line minimising the impacts, shortening the distances from the region to the airports of Lisbon and Porto, Emílio Torrão stressed that the CIM will never "give up demanding an airport infrastructure".
"On the other side of the Tagus, the flow of people from the Centre of the country to the capital and abroad becomes longer and more complex. If in the past we demanded an airport north of the Tagus, now it will have to be much more in the centre", he stressed.
For Emílio Torrão, "it is imperative that the Interior and the Centre of the country be more accessible to an airport infrastructure", considering that the "overwhelming majority" of the municipalities in the Centre region are aligned with this position.
The Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro, announced on Tuesday that the Government had approved the construction of the new airport for the Lisbon region in Alcochete, following the recommendation of the Independent Technical Commission (CTI).
