"On behalf of Portugal and myself, I express all solidarity to my colleague Robert Fico, Prime Minister of Slovakia, wishing his full recovery. We condemn with all vehemence this unacceptable and barbaric act of political violence," reads a message published on Luís Montenegro's official account on social network X (formerly Twitter).

The Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, was injured in a shooting in Handlova, about 150 kilometers from the capital, and was taken to the hospital, according to the local press.

The television station TA3 reported that a suspect was arrested, while the Slovak news agency TASR reported that the vice-president of Parliament, Lubos Blaha, confirmed the incident.

Blaha was speaking at a session of Parliament, which is suspended until further notice.

The shooting took place in front of the local House of Culture, where the prime minister was meeting with his supporters. The police cordoned off the area.

A reporter from the daily newspaper Dennik N daily heard shots and then saw rescuers carrying the prime minister to a car.
