Former mayor of Vila Verde António Cerqueira dies at 85
The former mayor of Vila Verde, António Cerqueira, died today at the age of 85, according to this local authority in the district of Braga, which has declared three days of municipal mourning.

"The municipality of Vila Verde is in mourning. António Cerqueira, who was mayor of the Municipal Council of Vila Verde and to whom homage is due for the work he carried out in the political and social fields, with an inestimable contribution to the history and development of the municipality of Vila Verde, passed away today", states a note of regret.
Born on 30 September 1938, in Santa Maria de Mós, municipality of Vila Verde, António Cerqueira was mayor of Vila Verde for six terms, from the first local elections after 25 April, from 1976 to 1997.
António Cerqueira was also a primary school teacher for 16 years, 12 of which were in Mozambique.
"Vila Verde will eternally remember António Cerqueira, for his characteristic personality, at the service of the municipality and its parishes. A unique figure in our municipality, he was present in countless institutions where he left his mark. He was a man of causes and of great work in all the parishes of the municipality of Vila Verde. His death impoverishes Vila Verde", stresses the local authority.
In the note of regret, the mayor of the local authority, Júlia Fernandes (PSD), "sends her deepest condolences to the family, also decreeing three days of municipal mourning".
The funeral ceremonies will take place on Thursday, in the parish church of Santa Maria de Mós.
The body of António Cerqueira will lie in state from 09:30 on Thursday and the funeral will take place at 18:30, with burial in the local cemetery, also states the municipality.
