An exhibition featuring 230 painted plants lasted less than two days after its contents sparked controversy on social media on Monday. the content sparked controversy on social media.

"Braga Parque would like to inform that, after careful consideration and taking into account the appeals of the community - which it values so much - it has decided to cancel the exhibition 'ContraNatura'", the shopping centre's management began by writing in a post shared on Tuesday on Facebook.

Braga Parque stresses, however, that it believed that this was an "initiative and opportunity to convey a message in favour of the environment", but after an assessment and request for opinions, it opted to close the exhibition.

"Braga Parque has the utmost respect for Nature and for the concerns expressed by the community. In this sense, the cancellation of this exhibition, with immediate effect, reflects its commitment to listening and acting accordingly, and therefore the shopping centre informs that it will start an action to preserve the plants, with the support of Sofia Manuel and the company Arvorena, specialised in the maintenance of gardens and green spaces", they also write on the social network, concluding: "The plants will then be donated, as planned, to several institutions in the city of Braga".

At issue was an exhibition by Italian artist Giacomo Cossio, who was described as an "environmentalist". After the inauguration on Monday, the shopping centre's Instagram was 'filled' with criticism - from users such as visual arts teachers to personalities such as Sofia Manuel, better known as 'Tripeirinha'.

While the teachers pointed out that they would use the situation to show their students "a terrible example of art", Sofia, "a civil engineer who became a gardener", made a video lamenting the situation. "Fed up with gratuitous and continuous disrespect for our home. Fed up with the 'sustainability' flag being flown when it doesn't belong to them", she began by saying, on her account which has more than 194,000 followers.

In addition to Sofia Manuel's page, other 'well-known pages' on social networks also reacted and asked Braga Parque to put an end to the exhibition, which was scheduled to run until 13 June.
