"It has already been possible to restore a stable and reliable power supply to the hospital's east wing", said Manuela Gomes de Menezes, adding that the work will continue over the next two weeks with the installation of two new transformer stations.

On May 4, the Hospital of the Divine Holy Spirit in Ponta Delgada suffered a fire that forced the transfer of all inpatients to various locations in the Azores, Madeira and the mainland.

Today, at a press conference at the hospital, the official said that the restoration of power "is a vital part of the HDES machinery, and will allow other parts to be set in motion".

This includes thorough cleaning, testing of equipment, air ducts and the air conditioning system, as well as the medical gas system, she said.

Manuela Gomes de Menezes said that two days after the fire at the HDES, the board of directors "decided to open an investigation into the causes of the incident", which is "underway".

In this regard, "the Order of Engineers was asked to appoint experts who will ensure, in a totally independent and appropriate manner, the technical study of the causes of the incident under investigation", she added.

The president of the HDES said that she hopes this process "will be completed as soon as possible, so that its conclusions can contribute to the work to be carried out within the scope of the working group created by resolution of the Regional Government".

Manuela Gomes de Menezes said that the conclusions of the process "will naturally be made public", and that "it is not yet possible to quantify the extent of the damage" caused by the fire.

According to the HDES, "once the safety and normal functioning of all systems is guaranteed", it is expected to "move forward with the partial reopening of the outpatient clinic, the resumption of the patient transport service and the return of non-clinical hospital staff".

Immediately after the fire, the Government of the Azores declared a state of public calamity to "accelerate procedures" to allow the activity of the largest health unit in the Azores to return to normal in a "short space of time".
