The Mayor of the Barreiro Municipal Council, Frederico Rosa, was pleased with the announcement of the construction of a new bridge over the Tagus River, which will connect the Chelas area in Lisbon to Barreiro.

Speaking to SIC Notícias, the mayor stressed, however, that this is not the first time that such an announcement has reached the ears of the people of Barreiro.

"We welcome it with enthusiasm, but knowing that it is not the first time that we have received announcements about the Barreiro bridge. In 2008, it had also been announced," he said, arguing, on the other hand, that the "political consensus" and "the conditions that the country has, with its public accounts, with this framework", make him believe that "this may be the time to start taking it off paper and putting it into reality" the bridge.

"One thing is to deal with it as an expectation, another thing is to deal with it in reality," he also warned, showing himself "eager" for the arrival of the "constraints" that the construction of the bridge may cause, because "it is synonymous with the fact that we are under construction". "It is a sign that we have finally stopped having announcements about the bridge and we are talking about building the bridge," he continued.

Frederico Rosa took the opportunity to guarantee that "there are no works of this dimension without impact, and everyone is aware of this" and "if we only talk, if nothing comes out of the paper, nothing has an impact", but "in the end, the positive impacts will be much greater than the negative impacts".

The Prime Minister, the social democrat Luís Montenegro, announced on Tuesday that the Government has approved the construction of the new airport for the Lisbon region at the Alcochete Shooting Range, to be called Luís de Camões Airport, with a view to completely replacing Humberto Delgado Airport.

The Air Force Shooting Range, also known as the Alcochete Shooting Range (due to the proximity of this urban centre), is mostly located in the parish of Samora Correia, in the municipality of Benavente (district of Santarém), and also has a small part in the parish of Canha, in the municipality of Montijo (district of Setúbal).

The Executive also decided to mandate Infraestruturas de Portugal to conclude the studies for the construction of the Third Tagus Crossing and the Lisbon-Madrid high-speed rail link.
