The fire broke out at around 13:15 in a building on Rua das Mercês, near Largo da Saúde, in the centre of Funchal, and mobilised about 20 members of the city's two fire brigades -- the Sapadores and the Voluntários Madeirenses -- with no record of injuries.
"It was an old building, with partition walls, and the firefighters found fire outbreaks between walls, which required a firefighting effort with more water", explained to the Lusa agency the councillor Bruno Pereira, who oversees municipal civil protection, stating that the building was partially destroyed.
The official said that an assessment of the habitability conditions will be carried out in the coming days.
"I can say that, from the point of view of the fire and the rescue, the operation is practically over, it is in the aftermath situation", he stressed.
