The facade of the Assembly of the Republic is, this Thursday, illuminated with the colors of the rainbow flag. The goal is to "mark the fight against prejudice and the defense of the rights of LGBTQI+ people."
The initiative comes on the eve of the National Day against Homophobia and Transphobia, which was established by the Assembly of the Republic, in 2015, "reflecting the Parliament's commitment to fulfilling national and international commitments to combat homophobic and transphobic discrimination".
The measure was proposed by the Left Bloc (BE) and, according to Público, only Chega and CDS opposed it. In a letter sent to the president of the Assembly of the Republic, José Pedro Aguiar-Branco, the leader of the BE parliamentary group, Fabian Figueiredo, proposed that the Palácio de São Bento be illuminated with the colors of the rainbow, similar to what happened last year.
On the social network X (formerly Twitter), BE described the initiative as "a sign of the democratic demand for equality", which "marks the will of so many people to defend the rights conquered by LGBTQI+ people and the will to fight for full equality, not only in the law but in life".
"The Left Bloc does not back down on its commitment to advancing freedom and equality for all people", the party also stated.
O Bloco de Esquerda não recua no seu compromisso com o avanço da liberdade e da igualdade para todas as pessoas.
