Man convicted of assaulting elderly mother on whom he was financially dependent
The Court found it proven that the defendant assaulted the septuagenarian "on a practically daily basis".

A man was sentenced, on April 29, by the Court of Sintra, to a four-year and 11-month effective prison sentence for a crime of aggravated domestic violence, which his mother was the target of, and a crime of resistance and coercion against a public official.
"By sentence handed down on April 29, 2024, the Local Criminal Court of Sintra sentenced a defendant for the practice of a crime of aggravated domestic violence, to a sentence of 4 years and 8 months in prison. He was also sentenced for the practice of a crime of resistance and coercion against a public official, to a sentence of 1 year and 2 months in prison", reveals a note from the Regional Public Prosecutor's Office of Lisbon, released on Thursday.
In legal accumulation of the two partial sentences, the defendant was "sentenced to a single sentence of 4 years and 11 months in effective prison".
The man is also prohibited from contacting his mother "for a period of five years" and was also sentenced to pay the victim "the amount of five thousand euros as compensation for non-patrimonial damages suffered as a result of the practice of the crimes".
The Court "proved that the defendant, since 2021, had been exercising psychological and physical violence against his mother, a septuagenarian and on whom he depended economically, with an almost daily frequency, inside their shared home, assaulting her and uttering statements that offended her and caused her fear and unease, also demanding that she constantly give him money".
The defendant "was in preventive detention, and the court determined that he should continue to await the further terms of the process subject to this same measure of coercion".
The conviction has not yet become final.
