The data is compiled by the Epidemiology and Surveillance System for Trauma and Accidents (Evita), which records episodes of domestic and leisure accidents that reach the emergency services of the National Health Service (SNS) hospitals.
According to a report published today by INSA, of the 218,657 cases registered in 2022, men were more affected by accidents (50.6%) than women (49.4%),
According to the same data, the highest peak in demand for emergency services was recorded in the summer months and May was the month with the highest demand, with 9.5% of the total cases.
The highest prevalence of domestic and leisure accidents in men occurred between the ages of 0 and 54 and in women it was over 55 years old.
Of the accidents recorded in 2022, more than half occurred at home (52.3%), 19% in schools, institutional areas and public spaces, 11.5% outdoors and 1.8% in areas of fun and entertainment.
According to Insa, a large part of the cases reported (49.2%) had the activity at the time of the accident recorded as 'unknown', followed by the categories 'domestic activity' (10.3%) and 'leisure' (13.3%).
Leisure accidents were more frequent in men (59.4%) and more common from 0 to 54 years old.
Among the causes that contributed most to the number of accidents recorded are falls, representing 68.7% of the total cases, followed by contact with people, animals and objects, with around 13%.
Insa's data also reveal that 56.2% of the cases recorded were 'bruise/hematoma', followed by 'open wounds' (19.1% of the total) ", while 'burns' were the cause of 0.9% of the cases recorded.
The Evita system, coordinated by Insa since 2000, with the collaboration of the Shared Services of the Ministry of Health, monitors domestic and leisure accidents registered in the SNS, considering all accidents that are not traffic, work, violence or occurrence caused by illness.
