Azores. Parliament guarantees that displaced patients will not leave the hotel

The president of the parliament of the Azores, Luís Garcia, assured today that the patients transferred to Faial will not have to leave the hotel where they are staying because of the Day of the Azores or the discussion of the Budget for 2024.

"As soon as we became aware of this difficulty regarding accommodation, we contacted the hotel units and, with the availability of some members of parliament and members of the Government, it is guaranteed that the patients can continue in the hotel units, under the same conditions, which they have had until this moment", stressed the deputy, elected by the PSD/CDS-PP/PPM coalition.

At issue was the risk that the 31 hemodialysis patients, transferred from Ponta Delgada (São Miguel) to Horta due to the fire that broke out on May 4 at the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, would have to leave the hotel units where they are temporarily housed due to the lack of accommodation in Faial because of the Azores Day celebrations, which will take place on Monday, and the debate on the proposals of the Regional Government's Plan and Budget, which will be held between May 21 and 24.

The PS and Chega in the Azores today lamented that these patients are being removed from hotels to accommodate politicians and proposed that the Azores Day celebrations and debate on the proposals of the Regional Government's Plan and Budget be postponed.

"The Azores have survived until now without a Budget, they can survive another week, fifteen days, a month (...) Nobody dies because there is no Budget. And nobody dies if Azores Day is not held in the Assembly on Monday", defended today José Pacheco, parliamentary leader of Chega, at a press conference.

The PS/Azores parliamentary group also proposed, in a letter sent to the president of the Regional Assembly, that the date of this month's plenary session be changed, showing willingness for the deputies to be reallocated, in order to prevent displaced patients in Faial from having to leave the hotel units.

"Nobody will leave the hotels because of the Region's Day, or because of the plenary", now insists Luís Garcia, recalling that the accommodation reservations made by parliament, both for the 57 deputies and for the guests, had been made "a long time" ago and that they predate the fire at the Hospital de Ponta Delgada.

Also today, a source from the Azorean executive, led by the social democrat José Manuel Bolieiro, had guaranteed to Lusa that "no patient in a hotel will have to leave their room", because of the political ceremonies.
