Nova University Lisbon concerned about the evolution of the protests

The board of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa considered that today's blockade of one of the buildings went beyond "a peaceful demonstration" and stated that it is concerned about the evolution of the student protests.

"One of the buildings of the NOVA FCSH Campus on Avenida de Berna was blocked by a group of students identified as 'Students for an End to Genocide and an End to Fossil Fuels', going beyond what can be understood as a peaceful demonstration and putting the demonstrators themselves and the other members of the community at risk", says the university management, in a statement.

The new FCSH states that the action caused "damage to the blocked building" and "the group broke down the door to access the roof, did not allow the scheduled classes to take place and prevented teachers from accessing their offices".

The university management emphasises that it has maintained, from the beginning, "a principle of dialogue and understanding in relation to this protest, especially for defending causes of indisputable relevance, however, it cannot fail to express its greatest concern about the evolution of the situation".

"NOVA FCSH appeals to the common sense of the students involved in this protest, so that the previously opened line of dialogue can be resumed", it also indicates.

A source from the "End Genocide, End Fossil Fuels" movement told Lusa that about 20 students today blocked the interior of building C, with two floors, of FCSH on Avenida de Berna in Lisbon to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza and the end of fossil fuels by 2030.

In a statement, the movement reports that the blockade of one of the main buildings of the faculty takes place a week after the students occupied the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences.

The students state that "this action arises in the context of a student uprising that began in the United States and has spread to the rest of the world" and that "several schools are already occupied with the motto "End Fossil, End Genocide".

This student movement demands that the Government defend an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and a plan to end the use of fossil fuels by 2030 in Portugal.

The movement indicates in the statement that, "after an occupation in the Faculty of Psychology, in the Faculty of Fine Arts and in FCSH, the students announce that they will expand their space of struggle to more faculties in the coming days, and say that they will continue to resist any attempts at repression".

The students also appeal for the whole of society to join them on 8th June in a march to the Representation Office of the European Parliament in Lisbon, where they intend to denounce the lack of response from the European Union to the genocide in Gaza and the climate crisis.
