"It is normal that a reorganization [of services] is necessary, given the context in which we live, but the provision of health care to the people of the Azores is not at stake, and this is a message of reassurance that I would like to convey," Mónica Seidi told reporters today after a visit to the Santo Espírito Hospital on Terceira Island, in Angra do Heroísmo, which is receiving patients from the Ponta Delgada hospital, on the island of São Miguel, which was affected by a fire on May 4.

Patients from the island of São Miguel who need to undergo hemodialysis have been transferred to the hospitals of Angra do Heroísmo (Terceira Island), Horta (Faial Island) and Madeira.

According to the minister, the regional executive of the PSD/CDS-PP/PPM coalition is concerned with "returning these patients to their island, their family, their home, their hospital" safely.

"We are talking about a specific treatment, which requires analytical parameters that are evaluated in laboratories in the region and even, [which] in some cases, will have to go abroad," she explained.

The Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo (HDES) in Ponta Delgada is gradually resuming oncological treatments and consultations, but the hemodialysis service is still awaiting water tests before resuming treatments.

Mónica Seidi reported that after the fire, as a safety measure, the water tanks of that health unit were emptied and refilled, and the first results of the tests were positive.

As she mentioned, a counter-analysis is now necessary, so that there is "100% confidence" and the displaced patients can return "safely" to the largest hospital on the island of São Miguel.

"We hope that during the next week we can have the result of the counter-analysis and that everything remains within normal parameters," continued the health minister in the Azores archipelago.

According to Mónica Seidi, the return of hemodialysis patients to the HDES will be gradual: "Not all 120 [patients] will return at the same time. It will be necessary to organize, perhaps by groups and, naturally, [this return] will take into account the indications of the HDES's own Nephrology service.

The fire at the Hospital do Divino Espírito Santo, in Ponta Delgada, on the island of São Miguel, which broke out on May 4, forced the transfer of all the patients who were hospitalized to various locations in the Azores, Madeira and the mainland.
