"It was with astonishment, indignation and sadness that we learned that the police authorities of Tavira and Porto decided to prevent the Kidical Mass", an initiative of child-friendly cities and bicycles, regrets MUBi, in a statement.

Considering this decision a "flagrant violation of the right to demonstrate", the association believes that the police "decided to abuse their discretionary power and prevent children and parents from demonstrating on the public highway".

The police banned the initiatives planned in the two cities "with unclear and arbitrary reasons", he accuses, stressing that the initiative only intends to demand "safe streets".

At the same time, the association points the finger at the municipal councils, considering it "outrageous" that they witness the police action "refusing to participate in the process" of guaranteeing "peaceful demonstrations" involving children and young people.

Kidical Mass is an alliance with more than 700 organizations, associations and initiatives for the right of children and young people to be able to move safely and autonomously on foot and by bicycle.

MUBi recalls that the initiative takes place in an atmosphere of "joy" in more than 30 locations in Portugal, regretting the "exception" of Tavira and Porto.

And, therefore, MUBi will present a request for clarification and a complaint to the Ministry of Internal Administration, the Public Prosecutor's Office and the Ombudsman".

"The right to mobility in active modes, in safety, is called into question daily. The right to the city by children and young people, rarely involved or considered in urban planning, is unfortunately still a utopia in Portugal", the association points out.

On May 13, the Public Security Police (PSP) issued a negative opinion on the Kidical Mass in Porto.

According to a statement from the Porto Municipal Police, which cites the PSP's negative opinion, the reason was due to the understanding that the presence of bicycles "conflicts with the freedom of movement of other citizens", could "cause constraints to traffic in the surrounding area and access to hospital units near the parade route" and "endanger the safety of participants and other users of the public highway".
