APAV supported more than 5,660 children and young people who were victims of crime

Over 5,660 children and young people were supported by the Portuguese Association for Victim Support (APAV) in the last two years, a figure that rose by 18.2% last year, reaching an average of eight per day.

According to the data released today, APAV supported 3,066 (2,595 in 2022) children and young victims of crime last year, which represented almost 60 per week. In total, the association became aware of 10,271 crimes and other forms of violence against children and young people in the last two years, most of them (62.6%) related to domestic violence, which rose by 20.7% between 2022 and 2023. According to APAV's 2022-2023 statistics, 2,914 crimes of domestic violence against children and young people were registered in 2022, a number that rose to 3,518 last year. Sexual crimes against the same type of victims rose even more (+29.8%), going from 1,356 in 2022 to 1,760 last year. In the report released today, APAV also draws the victim's profile: most are female (60.7%), aged between 11 and 14 (31.5%), of Portuguese nationality (80.1%) and most live in the district of Faro (26.8%). According to the association, 1,518 children and young people living in the district of Faro were supported, 836 in Lisbon, 609 in Braga and 513 in Porto. The crime exists continuously in 32.9% of cases, lasting two or three years (18.6%) and the place of violence is the common residence in almost half of the cases (49.9%). In 61.2% of cases, a complaint was made and in 19.5% the victims did not complain. As for the profile of the perpetrator of violence against children and young people, most are male (60.1%), belong to the age group 36-45 (11.5%) and the victim is their son/daughter (35.7%). As for the type of crimes and other forms of violence, most of the cases registered in the last two years refer to domestic violence (6,432 crimes, 62.6%), followed by child sexual abuse (1,049, 10.2%), bullying (177, 0.7%) and sexual abuse of a dependent minor or in a particularly vulnerable situation (165, 1.6%). 151 crimes (1.5%) of rape, 123 of sexual harassment (1.2%), 115 of grooming minors for sexual purposes (1.1%), 111 of child pornography (1.1%), 108 of threats to physical integrity (1.1%) and 97 of threats/coercion were also registered. APAV also registered eight crimes of human trafficking. The association highlights that between 2022 and 2023 it carried out 1,887 training initiatives for the prevention and awareness of violence against young people, which had more than 40,000 participants. The Portuguese Association for Victim Support provides free, confidential and specialised support to victims of all crimes.
