Several students from the 'End Genocide, End Fossil' movement remain in one of the main buildings of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences in Lisbon, after barricading themselves inside early on Saturday morning.

According to a statement to which Notícias ao Minuto has access, this action is part of a student movement to occupy and blockade schools that has spread throughout the world. "The student movement demands that the Government defend an immediate and unconditional ceasefire and a plan to end the use of fossil fuels by 2030 in Portugal," it reads.

"We will remain in the Faculty until it is no longer possible to ignore what we are saying. We are not here because we want to be, we are here because the world we see and our future demand it," says Joana Fraga, one of the students inside the building.

"Students are agents of change and schools are our spaces. We have every legitimacy to be here. We are going to transform this building into a space that is truly ours, for discussion, learning and organization. We are finally going to bring into the classrooms the urgent issues that we see being made invisible every day," she adds.

Regarding the communication sent by the management of the Faculty of Social and Human Sciences of the Universidade Nova de Lisboa, which considered that the blockade had gone beyond "a peaceful demonstration" and stated that it was concerned about the evolution of the students' protests, they say they are "perplexed".

"It mentions things that don't even make sense, like the fact that we broke down doors to the roof that don't even exist, or that our protest "is no longer peaceful" just because it has become more disruptive, which shows a lack of historical and current understanding of the meaning and objectives of a protest," says Matilde.

"The position of the management is also clear, because if it really understood these crises as it claims, it would not prevent or criticize this type of protest. To object to a minimally disruptive peaceful demonstration when millions of lives, an ongoing genocide and the future of all its students are at stake is to ignore the seriousness of the situation.

On the social networks of Greve Climática Lisboa, the group has already asked for someone to bring them meals.
