Workers at the company Tratolixo started a 24-hour strike at 00:00 today to demand salary improvements. The strike was called by the National Union of Local and Regional Administration Workers (STAL) and mobilizes workers from the factories in Trajouce, in the municipality of Cascais, and Mafra, totaling around 300 people.

"Tratolixo clarifies that the adherence to the strike called for today by the Union of Local Administration Workers (STAL) is less than 12%, and the company is operating normally in its facilities (Abrunheira, Trajouce and Ericeira), so this strike does not translate into any impact on waste collection or its treatment by Tratolixo", indicates a source from the company's management, in a note sent to the Lusa agency.

The numbers presented by Tratolixo's management contrast with the assessment made this morning by the union which, in statements to Lusa, indicated that the adherence to the strike was "around 80%" at 08:45.

"The strike is around 80% this morning. We have about fifty workers gathered near the company in São Domingos de Rana [municipality of Cascais] to demand better working conditions", Cátia Nunes, a STAL leader, told Lusa.

The immediate salary increase of 150 euros, the establishment of a 35-hour weekly working schedule, the allocation of a minimum salary of 1,000 euros during this year and a meal allowance of 10.50 euros, as well as a greater coverage of the unhealthiness, hardship and risk supplement are the main demands of the workers.

According to Cátia Nunes, the workers have been waiting for six years for the management to implement the Company Agreement, improving working conditions.

In the note sent to Lusa, Tratolixo's management emphasizes that "a negotiation process for the Company Agreement is underway, so the dialogue with the unions should continue at the negotiating table".

"Tratolixo recalls that, being aware of the importance of reinforcing purchasing power, it proceeded with salary increases for 2024 above those established in the legal diploma for the private sector and for the Public Administration, having guaranteed the increase in base remuneration above the value of the minimum wage established by law, a minimum increase of 52.63 euros in all levels and an increase in the initial levels of the salary table by 7.79%", it can also be read.

The last time Tratolixo workers went on strike was in December 2022, when they stopped for 48 hours.

Tratolixo is a certified intermunicipal company, 100% owned by AMTRES -- Association of Municipalities of Cascais, Mafra, Oeiras and Sintra, in the district of Lisbon, for the treatment of solid waste and responsible for the public service of treatment of urban waste produced by the more than 800,000 inhabitants of the municipalities of this urban waste management system.
