Marcelo defends that the sea is the "structuring axis" of Portugal's affirmation
The President of the Republic argues that the sea is a "structuring axis" for Portugal's affirmation in the world, at a time that he considers to be of "continentalisation of European politics" and "erosion of multilateral mechanisms".

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa assumes this position in a written message published today on the official website of the Presidency of the Republic on the Internet to mark European Maritime Day.
"On the occasion of European Maritime Day, the President of the Republic reaffirms the importance of the ocean as a pillar of our autonomy, independence and geostrategic potential in economic globalization, in carbon absorption, in the security of trade and critical infrastructures, and in the irreplaceable relationship that we promote between transatlantic peoples, both in the North Atlantic and in the South", reads the text.
The Head of State emphasizes that "Portugal has one of the largest economic zones in the world, with an ongoing process of extending its continental shelf in the United Nations".
According to Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, the extension of the continental shelf will give the country "increased responsibility in the various strategic dimensions of the present, further enhancing a sea of opportunities in scientific innovation, research and cooperation, namely in the preservation of biodiversity and the environment".
"The sea is, for all these reasons, a structuring axis of our global affirmation, at the entrance to an era marked by the continentalization of European politics, by competition between global and regional powers, and by the erosion of multilateral mechanisms, promoting, through this affirmation, the fight against climate change, the stability of the international order and sustainable development in our societies", says the President of the Republic.
