The facade of the newspaper Observador, located on Rua João Saraiva, in Lisbon, was vandalized in the early hours of Monday morning by several hooded members of the Libertarian Union group.

"Observador has been against social transformation for ten years - on the side of capital for ten years - committed to transphobia, racism, xenophobia for ten years - denying the climate crisis for ten years - normalizing fascism for ten years," one can read in a publication by the group, which claims to declare "queer insurgency".

It was on the night that the newspaper celebrated 10 years that "a group of transfeminist activists opposed the supposed impartiality in which the media exists," it also reads.

The group also states that "for years, the digital newspaper has served as a safe haven for the most transphobic and reactionary voices in Portuguese society", listing the chronicles and broadcasts of names such as José Manuel Fernandes, Helena Matos, Maria Helena Costa, José Diogo Quintela, among others.

"Observador has become the platform of choice for a type of commentary that uses criticism of political correctness to spread contempt and misinformation about lives about which it knows very little," alleges the Libertarian Union, saying that the newspaper propagates "hate speech about marginalized communities - trans, queer, black, immigrants, poor - to an audience of more than two million who, if they did not feel authorized to openly despise, can now do so with the approval of these respectable specialists".

To CNN Portugal, the newspaper's director, Miguel Pinheiro, confirmed that he will file a complaint with the police authorities. "At Observador, we are not in the habit of responding or dialoguing with people who act with hoods covering their faces during the early hours of the morning, attacking other people's property," he said, confirming that "the attackers painted some things on the facade".
