"This Association has always, always, always fought for democracy, for development and for freedom. It is fair that, for its 40 years, I should award it the Order of Freedom and that is what I am going to do", stated Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, during the lunch of the commemorations of the 40 years of ANMP, which took place at the São Francisco Convent, in Coimbra.

The President of the Republic handed the decoration to the president of ANMP, Luísa Salgueiro, emphasising that "all" the mayors deserve that distinction.

For Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, who was also mayor in three municipalities (Lisbon, Cascais and Celorico de Basto), the start of local democratic power in Portugal served as a "school of democracy".

"The Association was fundamental for the freedom of that time and fundamental for the freedom in the fight for minimum living conditions that did not exist in the 70s, 80s and, in many cases, in the 90s", he stressed.

The President of the Republic also recalled the importance of municipalities in social support in moments of crisis, such as the case with the pandemic or inflation.

Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa also considered that the fight for freedom is also made in the "affirmation of decentralisation" and a "greater protagonism and greater participation" of local authorities in access to European funds.

"We owe to the Association the fight for freedom, teaching and, at the same time, learning to live in democracy and in freedom", he highlighted.
