A source from the Santiago do Cacém GNR detachment explained to the Lusa agency that it was the victim who alerted the authorities at 5:00 am today, after being "stabbed in the chest".

"When they arrived at the scene, the officers from the Sines GNR station found the man alone, inside the house and in serious condition", explained the same source.

Speaking to Lusa, the commander of the Sines Volunteer Firefighters, Vítor Gonçalves, only indicated that the victim had "various injuries".

"When the firefighters arrived at the scene, they found an individual, possibly the victim of an assault, with various injuries and in a condition considered serious", he said.

The man was transported to the Litoral Alentejano Hospital, in the neighbouring municipality of Santiago do Cacém, "in a condition considered serious", and was later transferred by helicopter to a hospital unit in Lisbon, he added.

The source from the GNR contacted by Lusa explained that, "during the morning, efforts were made to find" the alleged suspect, the victim's 36-year-old wife.

This woman ended up "being located by officers from the Sines Station, around 12:30 pm, on the public road", he said.

The suspect was taken to the facilities of the Judiciary Police in Setúbal to be interrogated, he said.

Contacted by Lusa, a source from the Setúbal PJ indicated that efforts are underway to find out more details about this case.
