According to a note published on the Presidency’s website, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa conveyed "wishes for success, as well as for the continuation of development and strengthening of relations between Portugal and the Dominican Republic, both in the bilateral domain and in the Ibero-American context".

The Portuguese President of the Republic invited Luis Abinader to make an official visit to Portugal, which will take place on 28 May, it was reported.

Abinader, from the Modern Revolutionary Party (PRD, progressive and liberal), achieved a great electoral victory this Sunday, in the first round, by obtaining nearly 60% of the votes, against the former Dominican Head of State Leonel Fernández (progressive), from the Popular Force party, who governed in the periods 1996-2000, 2004-2008 and 2008-2012, and the former president of the Chamber of Deputies Abel Martínez (progressive).

The Dominican president will remain in office for the next four years after obtaining more than double the votes achieved by Fernández.

Both Fernández and Martínez acknowledged the winner by telephone, who in his victory speech guaranteed that "the Dominican Republic has changed and has changed forever".

Around 8.1 million voters were called to the polls for general elections that took place normally, although the opposition parties reported a series of minor irregularities.

On Sunday, the voters also chose the new deputies (32 seats) and senators (190), as well as 20 deputies for the Central American Parliament (Parlacen).

The elections were monitored by a mission of 84 people from 19 nationalities from the Organization of American States, led by the former president of Chile Eduardo Frei.

The Dominican Republic occupies part of the island of Santo Domingo, which it shares with another State, Haiti, considered the poorest nation in the Americas.
