Vigil for Palestine at São Jorge Cinema during Israel's party

The realization of the 76th anniversary celebrations of the State of Israel in a municipal space is generating a lot of controversy. BE has already requested its cancellation. EGEAC does not give in.

Vigil for Palestine at São Jorge Cinema during Israel's party
Over the last few months, several vigils in solidarity with Palestine have been held across the country. This week, the demonstration will take place in front of the São Jorge Cinema, in Lisbon, on Wednesday, May 22, the day on which the municipal facility, managed by EGEAC, will host the celebration of the 76th anniversary of the State of Israel.

The vigil, organized by the Unitary Platform of Solidarity with Palestine, is scheduled for 8 pm tomorrow, in protest against the celebration that marks, according to the platform, "the expulsion of millions of Palestinians from their homes and lands as well as the deadly colonial occupation of almost eight decades".

The platform also promises "another action" on the same day, "a little before the vigil". More details will be given soon.

It should be recalled that the celebration of the anniversary of the creation of the State of Israel at the São Jorge Cinema, which is managed by EGEAC, is generating a lot of controversy, due to the divisive issue of the Israel/Palestine conflict.

On social media, many people are speaking out against holding the ceremony in a municipal space, and even the Left Bloc (BE) has asked the Mayor of Lisbon to withdraw his "support" for this initiative.

To Notícias ao Minuto, the local authority referred clarifications to EGEAC, which, in turn, explained that this is a private event, just like others that have been held in the same space. Therefore, although Israel is involved in a war that divides public opinion, EGEAC believes "that this is also part of its public service mission".

It is also worth remembering that, this Monday, the International Criminal Court (ICC) appealed for the issuance of arrest warrants against Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu, Israeli Defense Minister Yoav Gallant, as well as several Hamas leaders, for war crimes and crimes against humanity.
