The hospital in Viana do Castelo has opened an inquiry "to investigate the circumstances" of the death of a 57-year-old man, who died in the emergency room on Friday, about seven hours after being given a green bracelet in the triage.
According to a statement to Notícias ao Minuto, the process "aims to be as brief as possible".
According to a report by a family member of Manuel Ricardo Ribeiro e Costa, to the Jornal de Notícias, the victim was admitted to the hospital on May 17, around 11:30 am, accompanied by his wife, presenting symptoms such as "chest pain and a numb arm".
In the triage, he was given a green bracelet (used for less urgent situations), and the man was not seen until around 3:30 pm, when he "collapsed unconscious in the waiting room".
The victim was still rescued, but, around 7 pm, the death was reported to the family.
In statements to the same source, the family says, outraged, that this is a case of "gross negligence".
To Notícias ao Minuto, the hospital's public relations office also presents "the deepest condolences to the family".
