The man who brutally beat his wife on Saturday night in Almada, leaving her in a "critical condition", has been placed in pre-trial detention

The information was given to Notícias ao Minuto by a source from the Public Security Police (PSP).

It is recalled that the attacks occurred on Saturday night and it was the victim's children who raised the alert.

The children aged 14, 11 and 9 left the house, leaving their siblings aged 6 and 11 months, and went into a nearby restaurant, where they asked for help.

Neighbours and customers still tried to enter the house where the man was brutally attacking the woman of about 40 years old, but only the Public Security Police (PSP) would manage to enter later, breaking down the door.

A source from this security force revealed to Notícias ao Minuto that, upon entering the house, the police officers found the woman already "prostrate on the floor", while the suspect tried to "prevent access to her body". The man initially did not obey the police orders to move away, but he ended up being handcuffed. Later, at the police station, he would become more violent.

The man, who is the biological father only of the 11-month-old baby, "did not have a single scratch on his body". The victim, however, was disfigured and had a depressed skull.

According to information from the Garcia de Orta Hospital to Notícias ao Minuto, the victim "is hospitalised, in a critical condition, in one of the Intensive Care Units, of the Intensive Medicine Service, of the ULS-Almada Seixal".

The PSP also states that although there are no formalised complaints of domestic violence, the neighbours reported to the authorities that they had already heard arguments between the couple.

All the children, including the 11-month-old, the suspect's daughter, were left in the care of the father of the older boys.
