País Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, spoke this Tuesday about the situation of homeless people.

"The previous government decided at the end to extend the strategy that came from the past for some more time. The current government will decide what its strategy is. Whether to extend the strategy of the past or change it," he said in statements to journalists, questioning how it will proceed in areas such as "housing in charge of the municipal councils, the domain of health, and employment."

Stressing that the prime minister and the mayor of Lisbon, Carlos Moedas, met to talk about the situation and the process, he said: "It means that, probably, by next week there will already be an idea of what the general position is on the strategy for the homeless and in particular what to do in the most serious cases. Lisbon is a serious case, Porto is next, and there are others that are heavy."

Marcelo also confirmed that he will receive Moedas next week to, "in the presence of the government, follow up" on the issue, in order to understand what will be done and how. "It's a race against time", he said.

Asked whether time was wasted in the fight, Marcelo pointed out that the successive crises have delayed the resolution, namely that of housing. "The sooner we intervene, the better," he said.

Marcelo was also asked whether the 'weight' was more a problem of articulation between policies or money, but replied that it was first necessary to hear from the executive. "I haven't heard yet. I'll hear later what the consequence of the government's action on the municipal councils is," he explained.

Lisbon is the city most affected by the phenomenon and currently has about 3,000 homeless people, 300 of whom are actually on the streets.

Marcelo, Moedas and Leitão Amaro meet on the 27th

About two hours after the initial statements above, the Presidency's website published a note stating that the meeting between the three leaders in question would take place next Monday, May 27th.

"Following the indispensable intervention of the Government regarding the National Strategy for the Integration of Homeless People, translated into the articulation between the competent departments in terms of the matter, under the coordination of the Minister of the Presidency, the President of the Republic will receive the Mayor of Lisbon, at his request, on May 27th, in interconnection with the competent Member of the Government", it reads.
