Speaking to Lusa, Miguel Pita, who today went to the municipality of Calheta to campaign, addressed the lack of employees available to work in sectors such as catering, stating that there have been cases of people registered with the Employment Institute who "show up poorly prepared or drunk to be rejected, because they prefer not to work and stay home receiving unemployment benefits".

In the candidate's opinion, it is necessary to "have greater supervision, greater scrutiny of people who apply for work and [understand] why they are rejected, or else, in the case of several rejections, put them in public service to justify the public money they receive".

Miguel Pita rejected that there is a lack of registered people at the Employment and Vocational Training Institute, insisting that "people just don't want to work" and "do everything not to be admitted", because "they even say that with the amount they receive they prefer to stay home".

"And the entrepreneurs here are left with a complicated situation, they don't have manpower, or they have to accept foreign manpower who don't speak Portuguese and have their own rules, not only of religion but also of food", he added.

The ADN was the least voted party, in 13 candidacies, in the last regional elections, having obtained 617 votes, which corresponded to 0.47% of the total.

The legislative elections on Sunday in Madeira will take place with 14 candidacies competing for the 47 seats in the regional parliament, in a single electoral constituency: ADN, BE, PS, Livre, IL, RIR, CDU (PCP/PEV), Chega, CDS-PP, MPT, PSD, PAN, PTP and JPP.

The early elections take place eight months after the most recent regional legislative elections, after the President of the Republic dissolved the Madeiran parliament, following the political crisis triggered in January, when the leader of the Regional Government (PSD/CDS-PP), Miguel Albuquerque, was named a defendant in a process in which suspicions of corruption are being investigated.

In September 2023, the PSD/CDS coalition won without an absolute majority and elected 23 deputies. The PS won 11, the JPP five, Chega four, while the CDU, IL, PAN (which signed a parliamentary incidence agreement with the social democrats) and the BE each obtained one mandate.
