Preventive for a couple suspected of theft at the door of a church on Terceira

A couple was remanded in custody on suspicion of a snatch theft from an 83-year-old elderly man, at the entrance of a church, in the parish of Santa Luzia, on Terceira island, in the Azores, revealed today the PSP.

According to the PSP Regional Command, the incident occurred in Santa Luzia, in the municipality of Angra do Heroísmo, and the suspect initially stole the contents of the church's alms box, before robbing the victim and then fleeing with "an accomplice who was waiting for him in a vehicle".

The couple ended up being "intercepted and arrested by police officers from the Praia da Vitória Police Station, and various materials related to this and other criminal offences were seized", the PSP said in a press release.

The man was "on parole and known for committing several thefts in various churches on the island of Terceira", according to the police source.

After appearing in court, the detainees, aged 34 and 41, were subjected to the most serious measure of coercion, preventive detention.
