The data is part of the latest annual report of the CPCJ Activity Assessment, for 2023, which will be presented today at the annual meeting of the CPCJ, promoted by the National Commission for the Promotion of the Rights and Protection of Children and Young People (CNPDPCJ), which takes place between the 22nd and 24th, in Covilhã.

The CPCJ accompanied 79,511 children and young people, which corresponds to an increase of 6.7% compared to the previous year, with the 309 commissions spread across the country having handled 84,196 promotion and protection processes, 7.7% more than in 2022, which demonstrates a "growing trend since 2020".

The National Commission explains that 4,685 promotion and protection processes due to procedural duplication must be removed from these more than 84 thousand processes. The CNPDPCJ adds that among the 84,196 processes handled, 32,432 were carried over from 2022 and the remaining 51,764 were initiated in 2023, including 42,622 new ones and 9,142 reopened.

Regarding danger reports, the CPCJ received 54,746, stressing that "each child may have reported more than one dangerous situation", which means that "the number of reports [is] higher than the number of processes that started the year".

According to the report, this value represents an increase of 10.5% compared to 2022, indicating that the most represented categories are neglect and domestic violence.

Due to situations of neglect, the CPCJ received 17,632 danger reports, while due to domestic violence there were 17,001.

There were also 10,370 reports of dangerous behaviour in childhood and adolescence, 2,859 for situations of physical abuse, 1,262 for sexual abuse, but also 533 situations of abandonment or 20 cases of children from armed conflict.

"The age group where the most reports are registered is between 15 and 18 years old (26.8%), followed by the group from 11 to 14 years old (with 25.7% of the reports). In third place, the group from zero to five years old represents 23.5% of the reports", can be read in the report.

It adds that the distribution between boys and girls is relatively homogeneous (53.54% boys and 46.46% girls).
