Palestine as a State? "This is not the right moment. When it is, it will be"

The President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, reacted this Wednesday to the recognition of the State of Palestine by Norway, Ireland and Spain, which will become official on May 28th.

Questioned by journalists, Marcelo stressed that "the Portuguese position is very clear". "Portugal has long defended, in line with the United Nations, the existence of two peoples, two States. One State for the Israeli people, another State for the Palestinian people. And even the terms in which this took place in the deliberation of the United Nations, at a certain historical moment", he said, in Rome, Italy, where he is for the inauguration of the photographic exhibition 'The dawn I was waiting for' on the occasion of the 50th anniversary of April 25, 1974.

Secondly, Marcelo highlighted that Portugal "took a step at a certain moment when it understood that Palestine should have associate status within the legal framework of the United Nations", but that the country did not stop there. "It has now taken another step when it understood that it should become a full member of the United Nations", he pointed out, recalling that this vote was "overwhelming".

And finally, he concluded: "They ask me: What about the step of recognition as a State? Portugal's position - which is not that of the Government, or Parliament or the President, but of Portugal as a whole - is to understand that this is not the right time to take that step. When it is appropriate, it will be appropriate".

Portugal maintains the will to recognise Palestine as a State, but is trying to obtain the greatest possible consensus among the members of the European Union (EU), said a source from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs today.

"It's just a matter of time", said the same source, recalling that Portugal has a position of mediator in the EU on this issue, and is therefore "in consultations with several States to reach the greatest consensus and bring the largest number of countries to the solution" of two States: Israel and Palestine.
