Speaking to reporters at the scene, José Marques, the commander of the Fire Brigade’s operations, said at around 10:00 that the evacuation of the station was complete and all passengers were outside.

"The first carriage, the driver’s, derailed and only caused two people [to feel unwell] among the passengers, who were assisted at the scene", said José Marques, adding that they showed "a slightly higher state of anxiety" but did not need to go to hospital.

According to the official, when the firefighters arrived at the scene, "the process of removing the passengers was already underway", and he said that it proceeded "calmly and peacefully".

"It was a somewhat lengthy process, of more or less an hour", he said, adding that it involved "an approximate number of 500 people" who had to leave, in a process overseen by ML teams, the PSP and the Fire Brigade.

A minor derailment of a train carriage on the ML Green Line at Alvalade station this morning caused no injuries, according to the PSP and the firefighters.

The Yellow Line of the Lisbon Metro is now operating normally, since 10:02, after having been closed due to a signalling problem, the company’s spokesperson told Lusa, a situation that was not related to the incident on the Green Line.

In the meantime, the Lisbon Metro has opened an investigation to determine the circumstances in which the incident occurred.

"The Lisbon Metro has already opened an investigation to determine the circumstances in which this situation occurred and, whenever justified, will release new information through its communication channels", the company said in a statement.

The Green Line - between Telheiras and Cais do Sodré - remains closed.
