The announcement of the death of Tracy Hickman, who suffered from an incurable cancer, was made by a friend on Instagram.

"She died on the beach, in the sun, surrounded by family and friends, just as she wanted," wrote Dom Harvey in a post where he also shared a photo of his friend, whom he described as "beloved, philanthropist, respected business consultant, avid chocolate lover and so much more", "with a heart of gold".

In the comments, many thank Tracy for the "example" and "inspiration" she always was.

Tracy, who spent her life traveling and participating in marathons, even after being diagnosed with breast cancer in 2019, had already revealed that she wanted to die while listening to the waves of the sea. She had previously announced on social media that she was going to resort to euthanasia in New Zealand and that she was "at peace" with this decision. "The closer I get to the date, the more at peace I feel," she wrote, adding, however, that she was saddened by the suffering that her decision was causing her family and friends, although they understood her.

"The alternative is to live for a few more months, but have an uncertain and painful death," said Tracy, whose health had worsened in recent months after the cancer spread throughout her body.

In an interview with The Guardian, the British woman urged the United Kingdom to change its laws on euthanasia. "Look at what New Zealand has done and do better. There is so much emphasis on the right to life, but people should also have the right to a peaceful and gentle death," she said.

It should be recalled that euthanasia has been legal in New Zealand since November 7, 2021. To be eligible for assisted death, the person must be over 18 years old and experiencing unbearable suffering and a terminal illness. The patient must also have a medical document certifying that they have no more than six months to live.
