Angeiras population wants to replace priest for canceling 82-year tradition

The population of Angeiras, in Matosinhos, wants the replacement of the priest of the parish of Lavra, accusing him of interrupting a tradition of 82 years by cancelling the Beach Festival, in August, one of the petitioners told Lusa today.

According to Mónica Oliveira, the issue is "the decision of priest António Augusto regarding the feast in honour of Our Lady of Fátima, or the Beach Feast, which takes place every two years between the first and second weekend of August", claiming that "the images have recently been restored and may be damaged". In the two petitions that are underway and that they want to deliver to the Bishop of Porto next week, the first requests the replacement of the parish priest and the second asks Manuel Linda for authorisation to hold the feast, said the subscriber and organiser of the protest group. The procession of the controversy, she explained, "takes place between the Lavra church and Angeiras beach, where the boats are blessed". Meanwhile, today, from 9 pm, the population will gather, in silence and mourning, in front of the church, protesting the "non-authorisation of the departure of the main image of the saint, as well as the other saints of the parish, to whom many have promises to fulfil, some of them over 40 years old" in August. "This is an 82-year-old tradition. It started after a distress at sea of Angeiras fishermen. It is very much felt in the locality", insisted Mónica Oliveira before regretting the priest's announcement "last Sunday that there would be no feast". Claiming to be "outraged" by the priest's decision, she also accuses him of strange decisions such as "not allowing children to enter the church after the restoration work, so as not to scratch the floor", an accumulation of decisions that, she said, "embarrasses and revolts everyone, especially because the works were paid for by the people". Lusa tried to contact Father António Augusto, who preferred not to comment on the matter. "To say that the images may be damaged in the procession is not acceptable. That is not a justification", insisted Mónica Oliveira, for whom the situation created "is a foot-stamping by the priest in collusion with the factory commission", ending by recalling that "the image of Our Lady of Fátima was offered to the fishermen and hence the revolt".
