A 39-year-old man was arrested on Friday, in Nazaré, district of Leiria, to serve a sentence of four years and four months in prison for the crime of drug trafficking.

According to a statement sent to Notícias ao Minuto, the Public Security Police (PSP) reported that the arrest took place on the esplanade of an establishment "after the suspect was recognized by a police officer who was off duty and who knew that there was a judicial warrant for his arrest to serve a sentence".

The officer requested the presence of police officers from the local station to carry out his arrest and, when approached and asked for identification, he showed a national driving license issued in the name of another person as his identification", reads the note.

The aim was to "falsely attest to his identity and mislead the police officers", added the PSP.

With this conduct, the citizen was trying to avoid being identified and, consequently, arrested, to serve the aforementioned prison sentence.

The detainee was taken to the Leiria Prison Establishment to serve his sentence.
