The strike was called by the Union of Commerce, Office and Service Workers of Portugal (CESP), which is also organizing a rally in front of the Ministry of Labor, Solidarity and Social Security in Lisbon at 2:00 pm.

In a statement, the union explained that the strike is the result of the rejection by the Union of Portuguese Misericórdias to update the Company Agreement and sign a collective labor agreement for the Santas Casas de Misericórdia.

"These two negotiation blockages with the CESP have increasingly resulted in the professional devaluation of thousands of workers," they justified.

The workers of the Union of Portuguese Misericórdias contest the intention to value seniority through a salary increase of five euros every five years and mention, as an example, that workers with 30 years of career would have a salary increase of only 30 euros compared to a colleague at the beginning of their career.

On the other hand, the union accuses the Union of Misericórdias of refusing to grant workers of the Santas Casas rights guaranteed by the extension order of the collective labor agreement of private social solidarity institutions.

The Institutions of the Union of Portuguese Misericórdias received 145 million euros more than in 2022 --- 11% more than the previous year, and with retroactives to January. We demand respect," emphasizes the CESP.
