At the end of the meeting with the Portuguese Prime Minister, Patrice Trovoada told the Lusa agency that this meeting had been in the works for a few weeks and that he had now taken advantage of his time in Portugal to make it happen.

"We had been trying to coordinate our schedules for a few weeks now and this time we managed to make it work. I am passing through Lisbon and it was a good opportunity to meet in person and we took the opportunity to revisit the cooperation, bilateral issues and the international agenda as well", he continued.

Asked if the military cooperation agreement between São Tomé and Moscow was a topic of conversation with Luís Montenegro, Trovoada said no.

"We talked about the international situation, the situation in Ukraine. Portugal knows perfectly well, and there was no need to insist, about the position of São Tomé and Príncipe, which is to condemn the invasion of Ukraine by Russia", he noted.

And he continued: "We obviously talked about the bilateral cooperation in the military field, the security situation in the Gulf of Guinea and we concluded that the relations are good, will continue to be good and we have to see to what extent we can deepen them".

Regarding the announced changes to CPLP (Community of Portuguese Language Countries) visas, after Portugal stated that proof of subsistence would be required for those who wish to enter Portugal with a CPLP authorization, Patrice Trovoada stated that "the intention, the principle behind it, remains unchanged".

"There are circumstances that Portugal knows about, that the Portuguese people know about, and that are Portugal's responsibility, and we will not interfere", he said.

For Trovoada, "the important thing is that the intention of greater integration, of people's movement, remains alive. Now, there are constraints that are the responsibility of those who govern Portugal and the Portuguese people and we will see the final result".

"The most important thing for us is that I did not feel any desire to go backwards. What I think is that Portugal belongs to several spaces -- CPLP, EU -- and there are constraints and there are factors that I am unaware of, but I believe that this political will on the part of the Portuguese governments continues".

And he added: "We are not in a static panorama, things evolve, there are constraints. We will leave and see what the final framework will be and then, obviously, we will deal with it".
