A 27-year-old man with symptoms of appendicitis was rescued by the Portuguese Navy on Monday while on board the Russian Federation ship 'AKADEMIK FEDOROV', which is passing through the Exclusive Economic Zone of Madeira and mainland Portugal, accompanied by the NRP Viana do Castelo.

Following a request for assistance received through the Lisbon Maritime Search and Rescue Coordination Centre (MRCC Lisbon), the situation was considered an urgent medical rescue, since the young man was showing symptoms of appendicitis, as detailed by the Portuguese Navy in a statement.

The rescue was carried out with the aid of the Air Force's EH101 and C295 helicopters, which, after landing at Transit Airfield No. 1, transported the victim to a hospital unit.

The young man's identity was verified by a member of the Public Security Police (PSP), for security reasons.

"The ship 'AKADEMIK FEDOROV' continues its journey as planned, always accompanied by a Portuguese Navy ship," the entity stressed.
