The Benagil Cave, near the village of Carvoeiro, is only accessible by sea and it was after an alert at the beginning of the afternoon indicating that there was a person on the beach feeling unwell that the Portimão Maritime Police went to the scene.

According to the maritime authority, the alert arrived at 2:58 p.m. "informing that a person had felt unwell upon arriving at the beach of the Benagil Cave".

In addition to this security force, an Emergency Medical and Resuscitation Vehicle (VMER) and INEM also went to the beach of Benagil, as well as elements of the Lagoa Volunteer Firefighters.

"Upon arriving at the beach of Benagil, it was found that the victim had been removed from inside the Benagil Cave by a maritime-tourist vessel to the beach, where he was assisted by INEM members, who performed resuscitation maneuvers, but it was not possible to reverse the situation", clarified the maritime authority in a statement.

The death was declared on the spot by the INEM doctor, and the victim was later transported to the National Institute of Legal Medicine and Forensic Sciences of Portimão.

The maritime authority adds that the victim's family is being supported by the Maritime Police Psychology Office.
