"We have here several very important measures in the area of housing for what is the scourge that we are experiencing. Today we have to have several solutions to resolve the housing problem [...], Lisbon has given proof of its capacity and we can help the central State even more", said Carlos Moedas.

The mayor was speaking to journalists on the sidelines of the inauguration of the second proximity clinic of the municipal project Lisboa + Saúde, located in Alta de Lisboa.

On Monday, the Government approved, in an extraordinary Council of Ministers, the creation of a legal regime for "semi-automatic injection of public vacant properties" into the market, for housing or other relevant projects, which will be done in conjunction with the municipalities.

In addition, it also approved proposals to amend the rules for local accommodation (AL) included by the previous executive in the Mais Habitação programme, such as the revocation of the extraordinary contribution, referring to the municipalities the regulation of the activity in their territories.

Carlos Moedas acknowledged the existence of "many buildings that are empty" and that the Lisbon City Council "can rebuild", working to resolve the lack of housing.

"Housing for us is 560 million euros in this PRR [Recovery and Resilience Plan] programme and it is an investment like never before", recalled the mayor.

According to Carlos Moedas, measures in the area of housing that "give a leading role to municipal councils are always welcome".

"And I think that here there are several that are very welcome. The issue of local accommodation is an issue that municipal councils can have a sense of where there can be local accommodation or not", he stressed.

Carlos Moedas also recalled that in Lisbon he tried to take the issue upon himself, but, at the time, the previous Government (PS), wanted to "give itself the guidelines" and, basically, "be in command of something that is totally local and that should be done by the local authority and I think that in this sense we are moving in the right direction".
