The third time's the charm. The president of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, arrived in Lisbon today for a visit of a few hours, his first to Portugal.

The plane that carried Zelensky from Brussels, where he traveled this morning after having been in Madrid, landed in Lisbon around 2:50 p.m.

Zelensky was received at the Figo Maduro military airfield by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro. Also present were the Ministers of Defense and Foreign Affairs, Nuno Melo and Paulo Rangel, respectively.

Zelensky greeted everyone present with a handshake and showed himself smiling. Later, it was Marcelo and Montenegro's turn to greet the Ukrainian delegation. Military honors followed.

The Ukrainian president will proceed to São Bento, where a bilateral meeting with Luís Montenegro will take place. The signing ceremony of the bilateral security commitment agreement will then take place, followed by a press conference.

Zelensky will then be received by Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, at the Palácio de Belém, where a dinner will be offered in honor of the president of Ukraine. Montenegro will also be present at this dinner.

In a statement, the Palácio de Belém and São Bento stressed that this visit by Zelensky "will also be an opportunity to reiterate Portugal's commitment to the sovereignty and territorial integrity of Ukraine, as well as to the maintenance of political, military, financial and humanitarian support to Kyiv".

Speaking to journalists in Brussels, the Minister of Foreign Affairs had said that the bilateral agreement to be signed during this visit by Zelensky covers all areas of cooperation between the two countries over the last two years: "humanitarian, financial, military and political assistance".

"It gathers all the dimensions in which we have worked, but in a systematized way, and with a ten-year horizon", added Paulo Rangel.

This bilateral agreement began to be planned after the last summit of the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO), in July of last year, in Vilnius (Lithuania), still with the previous Government, and includes all Portuguese intervention with the Ukrainian authorities since the beginning of the Russian invasion, on February 24, 2022.
