"There's a kind of love-hate relationship with RTP", says ombudswoman
The RTP's ombudsman argued today in parliament that there is a "kind of love-hate" relationship with the public broadcaster, adding that the vast majority of messages she receives are from people over 60.

"There is a sort of love-hate relationship with RTP. First, because people say 'we pay for it' and then because 'it was the television we had when we were kids'", pointed out the RTP ombudsman, Ana Sousa Dias, in response to the deputies, in the parliamentary committee on Culture, Communication, Youth and Sports, detailing that the vast majority of messages she receives come from people over 60 years old.
Ana Sousa Dias said she received "unpleasant criticism", which she classified as typical of love-hate cases, and conversely, few compliments, despite ensuring that "she finds it nice when someone writes to compliment".
The ombudsman, who took office at the end of 2021, pointed out that in order to solve all the problems pointed out in the messages she receives, there would have to be a television for each Portuguese person.
"I receive messages from people who are concerned because there was a swap in two episodes of [the series] Dallas, which must be being broadcast for the fiftieth time", she exemplified.
On the other hand, she told the deputies that there is a penalising and recurring theme, for which she still has no remedy, which is the Portuguese language errors in the footers.
As she clarified, the footers are written at the moment, without an automatic corrector.
These errors are transversal to Portuguese society, but, certainly, "the public service has redoubled obligations", she pointed out.
In this sense, the ombudsman advised more training and redoubled attention with regard to the selection of people who do this work.
The RTP ombudsman received, last year, more than 6,300 messages, with emphasis on bullfights, despite emphasising that the numbers are "exponentiated" by campaigns that appear on social networks.
