This position was conveyed by Luís Montenegro at the joint press conference with the President of Ukraine, Volodymyr Zelensky, after being questioned about the national diplomatic initiatives for CPLP countries to participate in the Peace Summit, on June 15 and 16, in Switzerland.

Countries such as Brazil or Mozambique, within the scope of their respective foreign policies, have assumed positions of greater distance in relation to an unequivocal condemnation of the Russian military intervention in Ukraine.

In his response, Luís Montenegro stated that today, during his meeting with the Ukrainian head of state, he addressed the issue of the Peace Conference in Switzerland. And he considered that "Portugal has been a committed intervener in all the forums in which it participates: in the European Union, in NATO, in the United Nations and obviously with countries with whom we have closer diplomatic relations".

"The Portuguese-speaking countries belong to this latter group. I spoke with President Zelensky about all the work we have done in Portugal to, in dialogue with these countries, be able to also mobilize them to support Ukraine, whether from an institutional and political point of view, or from the point of view of the future of what could be a process of reconstruction and recovery of Ukraine. This work has been undertaken by myself and by the Minister of State and Foreign Affairs [Paulo Rangel], who has taken advantage of the entire diplomatic network to introduce this subject in the conversations we have with interlocutor countries", he specified.

The Prime Minister then highlighted that the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, has also been on this diplomatic mission, "based on institutional cooperation that has been impeccable".

"So much so, that the President of the Republic had a meeting today with his counterpart from the Dominican Republic, where he also spoke about this subject and ensured the presence of that country at the Peace Summit", he added.

For his part, Luís Montenegro stated that he had a recent meeting with the Prime Minister of São Tomé and Príncipe, "who was also made aware of this effect".

"In Portugal, our diplomatic network and the President of the Republic are committed. Our aid to Ukraine is not limited to material, it is not measured in euros. It is also humanitarian and political aid", he added.
