After Spain on Monday and Brussels this morning, Zelensky arrived in Portugal at 14:50 for his first visit to the country, being received at Figo Maduro airbase by the President of the Republic, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, and by the Prime Minister, Luís Montenegro.

Also awaiting the Ukrainian Head of State were the Ministers of Foreign Affairs, Paulo Rangel, and of Defense, Nuno Melo, as well as the Chief of Staff of the Armed Forces, José Nunes da Fonseca, and the Chief of Staff of the Air Force, João Cartaxo Alves.

The high point of the visit was the signing of a cooperation and security agreement that foresees Portugal's commitment to provide Kyiv with military support of at least 126 million euros this year, including financial and in-kind contributions.

And the agreement signed in São Bento, between Montenegro and Zelensky, has a ten-year horizon and foresees that "Portugal will contribute with additional military support for Ukraine, including that to be agreed within the framework of the European Union, NATO and other relevant international forums".

Zelensky's visit was also a way to gather "confirmations" for the Peace Conference, organized by Switzerland on June 15 and 16, which already has several countries confirmed, but not yet the United States, and with Russia on the sidelines.

The President, Marcelo Rebelo de Sousa, will lead the Portuguese delegation to the Peace Summit that Ukraine is organizing and that will take place in Switzerland in June on the 15th and 16th and, in a joint press conference in São Bento, the Prime Minister also highlighted the action of the national diplomatic network and of the Head of State to mobilize third countries, especially from the Community of Portuguese Language Countries (CPLP), for the Peace Summit in Switzerland.

Zelensky thanked Portugal's support for Kyiv against the Russian invasion and highlighted the duration of the agreement signed between the two countries, with a validity of ten years, as a "strategic partnership".

Speaking to journalists after a meeting with the Prime Minister, Zelensky expressed gratitude for the support of the Portuguese people to the Ukrainians and their families, stating that it will never be forgotten and will constitute "a strong basis for the future relationship" between Portugal and Ukraine.

After Pedro Sánchez's government announced a package of one billion euros in armament on Monday, this morning Zelensky obtained from the Belgian government a commitment of almost one billion euros and 30 F-16 fighter jets, as a ten-year horizon, during the war and in the reconstruction.

The fighter jets made available by Belgium (which even so can only be used in Ukrainian territory) are a response to the claims made by Zelensky to reach Russian positions that the artillery is unable to.

The first one will arrive later this year, the rest, until 2028, announced Zelensky, who in Belgium also visited an F-16 airbase.

The visit to Portugal and Spain had already been postponed in early May due to the advances of Russian troops in the Kharkiv region (northeast), where Russian attacks are still taking place.

While Zelensky was flying from Brussels to Lisbon, the Russian President, Vladimir Putin, threatened Europe with "serious consequences" if NATO countries allow Ukraine to use Western weapons against targets in Russian territory.

"These representatives of NATO countries, especially in Europe, especially in small countries, should know what they are playing with," said Putin, quoted by the Spanish agency EFE at a press conference at the end of a visit to Uzbekistan.

"They should remember that, as a general rule, they are States with small territories, but densely populated," he threatened.
