BE/Azores leader resigns due to disagreement with regional leader

The former deputy of the Left Bloc to the Legislative Assembly of the Azores Alexandra Manes resigned from her duties in the Regional Secretariat and in the Coordinating Committee of the regional party structure, due to a disagreement with the leader of the bloc in the archipelago, António Lima.

"I hereby submit my resignation from the Secretariat and the CCR [Regional Coordinating Committee], since it does not seem to me that the conditions are in place for me to remain in these internal decision-making bodies", writes the leader in a letter sent on Thursday to the party's bodies, explaining that this "break" is not with the political project of the BE, "but rather with the actions of the regional coordinator".

Lusa attempted to obtain a reaction from the regional leader, who, according to an official source from BE/Açores, did not wish to make any comments, claiming that these are issues that should only be discussed within the party.

In the missive, to which Lusa had access, Alexandra Manes expresses her "dissatisfaction" with the internal direction that BE/Açores has taken, since António Lima, now the sole deputy in the archipelago, has led the structure.

"It is not from now, or from the last year, that I have been warning about the path that BE is taking, whether in the lack of closeness to its grassroots members or in the internal processes", recalls the former Bloco deputy, who failed to be re-elected in the regional elections of 4 February, for the electoral district of Terceira, where she was head of the list.

Alexandra Manes says that there are internal issues that displease her "as a political leader and as a citizen" and gives several examples, from the obligation for BE candidates to make a written commitment to the party to the "centralisation of the electoral campaign in a single person", as she believes happened in February.

The former deputy also mentions that it was António Lima who decided to end the rotation of deputies elected by the regional compensation circle (which occurred in previous legislatures) whenever the election of the regional coordinator of the Bloco is at stake: "an exception created and written by himself".

"I cannot fail to mention the attempt to discredit me that is being made by the regional coordinator", she criticises, complaining that she has been "removed" from positions of political appointment, in the parliamentary representation of BE in the Azorean parliament, due to "lack of political trust".

The resigning leader also accuses António Lima of having repeatedly prevented the presentation of candidate proposals that were different from the names suggested by the Secretariat, in different electoral acts.
